Canoeing The Congo Book: The First Source To Sea Descent Of The Congo River –

£19.99

Canoeing the Congo: the first descent of the Congo River, is the story of my 5 month solo attempt to canoe the Congo River in Central Africa from source to sea. Just short of 3000 miles, with a flow rate second only to the Amazon, I encountered waterfalls, huge rapids, vast swamps, crocodiles, hippos, aggressive snakes and spiders webs the size of houses.

I was also chased, catapulted and threatened at gunpoint. On one stretch, known as ‘the Abattoir’ for its history of cannibalism and reputation for criminal activity, the four brothers I hired as bodyguards were asked by locals, ‘Why haven’t you cut his throat yet?’

I also received astonishing hospitality and kindness from proud and brave people long-forgotten by the Western world, especially the friendly riverside fisherman, who were inspiring to say the least. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is an astonishing country to visit, especially ‘off the beaten track’. If you want an adventure … get yourself out there.
